Questions from beyond the veil

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything known so far about entering Tribulations, choosing a path, and taking part in its eternal conflict.

What is Tribulations?

Tribulations is an immersive OpenSim roleplaying world centered on the struggle between salvation and corruption. Players may become Mortals, members of Divine or Infernal Houses, or—under rare circumstances—one of the Unhallowed. The world combines lore, roleplay, combat, magick, survival, crafting, economy, and character progression.

Is Tribulations a game or a roleplay community?

It is both. Tribulations is a roleplaying world supported by interactive systems. Character choices, completed deeds, rivalries, marks, influence, combat, crafting, and other gameplay mechanics help shape the ongoing story.

Where does Tribulations take place?

The world-realm is called Demon Island. Its connected sub-realms are Thornridge, the Crossroads, Avernine Gate, Tartarus, Mercy’s Leave, the High Court, and the Ninth Veil.

What character paths are available?
  • Divine: Angels serving the seven Virtues.
  • Condemned: Demons serving the seven Sins.
  • Mortal: Living souls caught within the conflict.

The Unhallowed are a rare fourth state reached only after a being has been denied by every House and chooses to remain unclaimed.

Do I have to join a House?

Not every character begins inside a House. Mortals may remain outside the Houses while becoming involved in their conflicts. Divine and Condemned characters belong to Houses associated with their Virtue or Sin. The Unhallowed have no Houses.

How many Houses are there?

There are fourteen Houses: seven Divine Houses representing the Virtues and seven Infernal Houses representing the Sins. Each has its own patron, purpose, ranks, symbol, colour, weapon, fighting style, influence methods, and deed goals.

Can I choose any House?

Your House should fit your character’s nature, goals, behavior, and roleplay direction. House membership is more than a title; it creates loyalties, responsibilities, rivalries, and expectations within the world.

Can a character change Houses?

House changes should be meaningful roleplay events rather than casual selections. Betrayal, redemption, corruption, rejection, and changes in allegiance may carry serious consequences. The exact gameplay process will be documented as the system is completed.

What are Marks?

After judgment, a soul may become marked. The Mark of Grace draws a soul toward protection, restoration, guidance, and salvation. The Mark of Punishment draws a soul toward temptation, corruption, damage, and infernal claim. Marks make souls important targets within the conflict.

Why are Mortals called the currency of the Houses?

Houses gain influence through the lives and souls they affect. Saving, corrupting, protecting, tempting, restoring, or breaking a Mortal can strengthen a House’s position. Mortals are not passive objects, however. Their choices can support a claim, destroy a plan, resist both sides, or change the fate of another soul.

What are Deeds?

Deeds are meaningful actions performed in service to a House or path. Divine characters complete Deeds of Grace, while Infernal characters complete Deeds of Corruption. Deeds may affect souls, territory, influence, relationships, and character advancement.

Who are the Unhallowed?

The Unhallowed are rare beings rejected by the established Houses and left unclaimed by Divine or Infernal order. They are not neutral, balanced, or automatically half-angel and half-demon. They live by Chosen Law and may be approached for tasks the Houses cannot perform. Their favors create debts.

Can anyone choose to be Unhallowed?

No. A being cannot choose Unhallowed status before being denied. Rejection by the Houses is required first. After denial, becoming Unhallowed becomes a choice.

Can Angels, Demons, and Humans become Unhallowed?

Yes, through different paths:

  • Angel-born: rejected for shadow, indulgence, or defiance.
  • Demon-born: rejected for conscience, loyalty, or mercy.
  • Human-born: rejected by both sides after awakening or trial.

The Unhallowed remain extremely rare.

Is Tribulations adult-only?

Yes. Tribulations is intended for adults aged 18 and older. The setting may include mature themes such as violence, temptation, corruption, D/S, BDSM, power exchange, and psychological conflict. Consent and player boundaries always apply.

Do I need OpenSim experience?

No. New OpenSim users will be welcome. Viewer installation, grid access, character setup, HUD use, and beginning gameplay will be explained as those systems are finalized.

Is the world finished?

Tribulations is actively being developed. Lore, regions, scripted systems, gameplay, documentation, and this website will continue to expand. Development updates will be shared through Discord.
